It’s not every artist who will create grand art just to see it vanish, but Odessa Ford is not a typical artist.

Ford is an earthscape artist who creates elaborate sand art designs on central Oregon beaches using only rakes and sand as her canvas. Lasting sometimes only minutes, the waves eventually reclaim her work. leaving her left with only photographs and memories of the experience.

She has made about 35 of them over the past few years and feels like it is something she was born to do, although that passion came a little later in her life.

Ford earned a BFA in painting and holds a Master of Educational Technology degree from Boise State University. She had lost touch with her artistic side until the death of her first husband in 2016. Part of her healing process was starting to paint again, and Ford said she remade herself. “I shaved my head, and I just decided I needed to do what I needed to do for me.
